Departing from the New Bridge Slipway, Carrickbeg
The Festival has teamed up with Tipperary Sports Partnership and Canoeing Ireland to bring kayaks/canoes to the Blueway at Carrick-on-Suir. This is an exciting and unique opportunity to enjoy an introduction to kayaking on the tidal stretch of our wonderful river. See Carrick from the perspective of the river itself and those who worked on and lived beside it. Discover why the river is such a special place: steeped in history and a haven for wildlife.
All equipment and guidance will be provided. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.
Paddle through the true heart of Carrick on a scenic 1-hour+ kayak tour and take in the sights from the water. Zip up your lifejacket, hop aboard your single or tandem kayak, get tuition from kayak guides and set out along the river. Along the way spot the Hidden Arch at the Old Bridge, the Marina, the Quays, Dillon Bridge, the Navigation, the Ormond Castle and the unique islands on the foreshore. Travel from the clear limestone river water into the brackish estuary waters of the Suir and learn about the strange fish and other flora and fauna that can be found in the river.
The Kayak Tour of Carrick on Suir includes instruction on using a kayak and commentary from a local guide on the history of the river and the significant events that shaped the development of the town. The River Kayak Tour is a one off event to celebrate the river’s contribution to the town of Carrick-on-Suir during the Clancy Brothers Festival of Music and Art.
Full instruction will be provided. Each group of 12 – 16 participants ensures a fun and safe experience. The safety of participants will be overseen by trained kayak operators.
What to Expect
After checking in and meeting the guides at the start point New Bridge Slipway in Carrickbeg, (Tobar na gCrann), you’ll be given your flotation device, kayak and paddle. You will receive an instructional and safety briefing before launching. The guide will then lead you to explore Carrick’s famous river while taking in some of the town’s most iconic landmarks on this kayaking adventure.
See the town from a completely different perspective. Bring your camera, because you won’t want to miss the opportunity to capture photos from this unique angle. See Carrick as the first viking visitors did more than a 1,000 years ago. At the end of your kayaking experience you will return to the original departure point to return your equipment, change and retrieve any belongings you may have left in the storage.
